Christopher Jones

International artistic activist Christopher L. Jones has embarked on an illuminating odyssey, revealing his drive to trek the road less traveled to cultivate a progressive career. Some highlights on the journey include performing in Spoleto Festival, teaching as an adjunct professor, and presenting his research on The Origins of Gospel Music.

Throughout his undergraduate and graduate careers, Jones began traveling and seeking out opportunities via camps and workshops to aggrandize his academic perspective. With a Bachelors in Music Education from Langston University, a Masters in Music from the University of Central Oklahoma, and a postgraduate degree in Child Development/Sociology, he heightens his craft in teaching, mentoring, performing, and presenting.

Mr. Jones emphatically values teaching and mentoring because they allow him to touch the lives of those with whom he engages, especially youth - reaching them not just on a musical level, but connecting to their whole person. In 2011, he had the immense pleasure of mentoring through his position as an adjunct professor at Rose State Community College. As co-owner of A.R.T.S. OdySee, he expands his mentoring through various endeavors, namely, the popular youth music camps.

For Christopher, performing is much more than simply a show or display - it is an intimate experience, an exchange, between him and the audience. A few of his roles include: Monostatos in Opera in the Ozark’s The Magic Flute, Nelson in Spoleto’s Porgy and Bess, Fortune Teller in Tulsa Opera’s Tosca, and Parpignol in Tulsa Opera’s La Boheme. With Lied Austria and the American Institute of Musical Studies, both in Austria, he was able to deeply emote in several recitals. He also fulfilled missionary service of a musical capacity in Belarus, Russia, and Germany. He has performed on the television networks NBC and ABC, as well as ranking as a semi-finalist in The National Classical Singer Competition in May 2015.

Christopher is a lifelong learner and avid researcher, and enjoys sharing his discoveries with others. He has had the incredible honor of presenting a portion of his research, “The Origins of Gospel Music and its Contribution to American Music,” in 2009, 2012 and 2013 at Moore Public Library in Oklahoma. Due to his diligence, he was placed on the touring roster for the OK Arts Council and became recipient of both the Williamson Foundation for Music Award and the Oklahoma Federation of Women’s Music Club Scholarship Award. To better understand the dynamics of art and community, Jones is currently conducting independent research on how art influences social norms within society, as well as the effects of declining school art programs on low income communities.

Mr. Jones is able to fuse facets of his thus far eclectic journey into a mobile arts initiative, A.R.T.S. OdySee. One of the initiative's first endeavors, was the birth of a series entitled, "Black History Highlights" - cultural jewels connecting history to experience, which is composed of elements to intrigue and engage all ages. A.R.T.S. OdySee’s mission is that of cultivating community through the arts, whether through camps, workshops, or unique interactive art experiences. In addition to co-founding A.R.T.S. OdySee, Jones takes immense pride in his involvement with the following organizations: Phi Mu Alpha, NAFME, and NASPAAM.

Christopher’s journey is illustrative of the fact that from one opportunity can spring several more, and with his refreshing liberation from common confines, he utilizes each opportunity to elevate himself and others. Christopher Jones’s passion, perseverance, and great courage ensure that his odyssey will continue to be kaleidoscopic and influential for many years to come.
