Originally from Ruidoso, New Mexico, Clay Allen is a DMA student in music composition at the University of Colorado – Boulder. Clay earned his master’s in music composition from the University of North Texas and his bachelor’s in piano performance and pedagogy from West Texas A&M University.

Clay’s musical training began in Ruidoso in 2011 with his studies with Bryan Hutchinson. It was Bryan’s passionate teaching and love of music that inspired Clay to pursue music as a career and eventually become a teacher himself. While growing up in Ruidoso, Clay performed regularly with area ensembles, singing bass in choirs and playing tuba in concert band. During this time, he gained his earliest accompanying experience, playing for numerous instrumentalists and vocalists.

As an undergraduate at WTA&MU, Clay studied piano with Dr. Denise Parr-Scanlin, pedagogy with Choong-ha Nam, and composition with Dr. BJ Brooks. While at WTA&MU, Clay was awarded numerous scholarships and awards, including the Paula Hill Memorial Scholarship, the Pauline Brigham Memorial Scholarship, and the Honor Recital Star Performer award. He had also been a featured performer on the annual Showcase of Music. Clay has also performed extensively with the WTA&MU Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band and continued to be active performer as an accompanist and avid chamber musician.

As a composer, Clay’s music has been performed across the United States and in South America. Clay was selected to participate in the Cortona Sessions, a two-week summer festival and workshop located in the heart of Italy. Additionally, Clay currently serves as music director for First United Methodist Church in Aubrey and continues to work as a collaborative pianist.

Clay strongly believes in sharing his passion for music in performance and passing that passion on to others through teaching. As a teacher, Clay’s goal is to instill a love and appreciation of music into every one of his students so that the joys and benefits of music reach beyond boundaries and can touch more and more people.
