Trumpet
Ian Peratt is a jazz trumpet player and composer in the Denver metro area. He graduated with his bachelor's in jazz studies from CU Boulder in May of 2024, and he is looking for excited and passionate trumpet and jazz theory students in the area!
Ian started his musical journey playing piano from a young age. He grew fascinated with wind instruments when band was introduced into his school curriculum in 5th grade. He initially chose French horn, then tried saxophone the next year and stuck with it until the ninth grade, adding trumpet. Ian wanted to continue playing saxophone, but as fate would have it, the high school band needed more trumpets, so he played only trumpet. This ended up being a push in the right direction from the universe.
Ian developed a love of jazz through his peers and mentors in high school and became fascinated with the emotional expression that jazz musicians were able to tap into with their playing. He started learning jazz by transcribing Roy Hargrove and other beautifully melodic jazz players. His passion for jazz blossomed in college, and he grew into his sound with the support and guidance of incredible trumpet players like Brad Goode and Greg Gisbert.
Ian's compositions explore themes of life and the ever-expanding book of lessons learned through the journey of artistic and emotional expression. He heavily focuses on melodies and motivic development as vessels for musical and emotional content. He hopes to invoke feelings of nostalgia, hope, tension, and peace within the listeners of his pieces.
Ian has experience teaching in classrooms with middle and high school students and has had great success in helping students in private lessons as well. Although he focuses on jazz, he is confident in teaching trumpet lessons for any genre to beginner and intermediate students and jazz improvisation, jazz theory, and jazz composition lessons for any student on any instrument.
Ian uses tried-and-true trumpet method books such as Arban, H.L. Clarke, and Charles Colin's Lip Flexibilities for his trumpet students. His familiarity with many different styles makes him an excellent candidate for the trumpet player who wants a well-rounded perspective on the instrument, and a passionate teacher who is on a parallel journey with his students.
